What is Scratch Testing / Scratch Resistance?

Scratch testing / scratch resistance involves testing the scratch resistance of surfaces in vehicle interiors. The standard assesses how resistant visible surfaces are to scratches caused by fingernails, jewelry, or other objects.

Test Method

Typical Scratch Methods:
Erichsen Scratch Test: Defined force (0.5–20 N) with steel tip (R = 1 mm)
Fingernail Simulation: Rounded tip, 3–10 N
Crockmeter Test: Linear rubbing body, 9 N

Which surfaces are particularly susceptible to scratches?

High-gloss piano lacquer surfaces and soft-touch coatings. These are most frequently stressed in vehicles (center console, door handles, switches). Grained surfaces are generally more scratch-resistant than smooth ones.
