What is Cross-Cut Testing?
The cross-cut test involves assessing the adhesion of coatings and paints on substrates using the cross-cut method according to ISO 2409. A defined cut pattern is scribed into the coating, and the detachment is visually evaluated.
Test Method
Using a multi-blade cutting tool, two perpendicular cut patterns are scribed into the coating. The cutting distance depends on the layer thickness (1–3 mm). After cutting, an adhesive tape is applied and then removed.
Evaluation (Gt 0–5):
• Gt 0: Smooth cut edges, no detachment
• Gt 1: Small flaking at intersections (<5 %)
• Gt 2: Detachment at edges (5–15 %)
• Gt 3–5: Increasingly severe detachment

Frequently Asked Questions about Cross-Cut Testing
What does the cross-cut test evaluate?
The adhesion of a coating to the substrate. The evaluation is based on a scale from Gt 0 (perfect adhesion) to Gt 5 (over 65% detachment). Most automotive manufacturers require Gt 0 or Gt 1.
Which cutting distance is used?
The distance depends on the layer thickness: 1 mm for layers up to 60 µm, 2 mm for 61–120 µm, 3 mm for over 120 µm. Six parallel cuts are made in each direction.
Can the test also be performed on components?
Yes, the cross-cut test can be performed on flat component surfaces, provided there is a sufficiently large flat area (approx. 20 × 20 mm). Evaluation is limited on curved surfaces.
