Pimples

Analysis of Pimples in Paint Layers
Pimples are often caused by inclusions in the paint layer, forming a local elevation. These inclusions in the finished paint can originate, for example, from contaminations on the unpainted component, foreign materials, or agglomerated filler particles within the paint system. Improper painting techniques or gas inclusions are also potential sources of pimples. Frequently, fibers from clothing that were not adequately removed before painting are also found.
The inclusions that cause pimples in the paint layer are usually not directly accessible from the surface. To analyze the cause, the defect must be exposed through targeted preparation (microtome cross-section). Subsequently, analytical techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM-EDX) or microspectroscopic methods (IR / Raman) are employed, which can precisely analyze the composition in the defect area.
